Why Washing Locs the Right Way Matters

One of the most common questions in the loc community is: How do I wash my locs without unravelling them or causing buildup? The truth is, your washing routine should evolve with your locs. What works for a fresh set of starter locs is very different from what a mature loc needs. This guide breaks it all down, stage by stage.

Stage 1: New Locs (0–6 Months)

Handle With Care

New locs are delicate. The interlocking or palm-rolling that holds them together can be disrupted by aggressive washing, so your goal at this stage is gentle cleansing with minimal manipulation.

How Often to Wash

Aim to wash every 2–4 weeks during the first few months. Washing too frequently can loosen new locs before they've had a chance to lock down.

Tips for New Locs

  • Dilute your shampoo with water in a spray or applicator bottle and apply directly to the scalp β€” avoid rubbing or scrubbing through the lengths.
  • Rinse thoroughly. Residue left behind is one of the leading causes of scalp buildup.
  • Pat (don't rub) your locs dry with a microfibre towel.
  • Allow locs to dry completely before retwisting or going to bed β€” damp locs held together can develop mildew odour over time.

Scalp Buildup at This Stage

Buildup can start early, especially if you're using heavy creams or butters to encourage loc formation. If your scalp feels itchy, flaky, or congested, it's time to clarify. Our Clarity Scalp Tonic is formulated to gently lift buildup and soothe the scalp without disturbing your new locs' formation.

Stage 2: Maturing Locs (6–18 Months)

Finding Your Routine

By now, your locs are starting to tighten and take shape β€” congratulations! This is the stage where many people hit their stride with a consistent wash schedule.

How Often to Wash

Every 2-3 weeks is a good target for most people with maturing locs, depending on your activity level, scalp type, and climate.

Tips for Maturing Locs

  • You can now work shampoo more thoroughly through your locs, but still use a gentle, residue-free formula.
  • Focus the shampoo on your scalp β€” the lengths will be cleansed as water rinses through.
  • Rinse, rinse, rinse. Take twice as long rinsing as you do washing.
  • Squeeze (don't wring) excess water from your locs and follow with a microfibre wrap.

Sealing After Washing

Once your locs are about 80% dry, apply a lightweight sealing product to add shine and lock in moisture without attracting lint or buildup. Our Jojoba Sealing Gloss is a favourite for this stage β€” it seals the cuticle, reduces frizz, and gives locs a healthy, refined finish.

Stage 3: Mature Locs (18+ Months)

Established and Thriving

Mature locs are fully locked, dense, and more resilient. Your routine at this point can be more thorough, and you can focus on long-term scalp health and moisture retention.

How Often to Wash

Every 1–2 weeks remains a healthy cadence for most people. High-porosity locs or those who work out frequently may prefer weekly washing.

Tips for Mature Locs

  • Do a periodic clarifying wash every 4–6 weeks to remove mineral deposits, product residue, and environmental buildup β€” especially if you swim or use hard water.
  • You can use a scalp massager during washing to encourage circulation without disturbing the locs.
  • Ensure locs dry fully, especially at the roots and the core β€” even mature locs can develop odour if not dried properly. A hooded dryer or diffuser on low heat helps speed up drying safely.

Scalp Buildup in Mature Locs

Buildup tends to accumulate faster in mature locs because of their density. If you notice white or grey residue at the roots, or your scalp feels persistently itchy, reach for the Clarity Scalp Tonic between wash days for targeted relief without a full wash.

Sealing for Long-Term Health

After every wash, finish with a light sealing step to protect moisture and keep your locs looking polished. The Jojoba Sealing Gloss works beautifully on mature locs β€” a small amount goes a long way for lasting sheen.

General Loc Washing Tips (All Stages)

  • Always use a residue-free shampoo β€” products that leave behind waxes or heavy conditioners are the number one cause of buildup inside locs.
  • Dry completely β€” no matter your stage, always make sure your locs are fully dry before covering them or going to sleep.
  • Listen to your scalp β€” if it's itchy, flaky, or oily, wash sooner. If your locs feel dry and brittle, consider stretching wash days and focusing on moisture retention between washes.
  • Less product is more β€” especially in the early stages. Use only what you need, and opt for lightweight, water-soluble formulas.
